Kashaya

A sip of good health

Welcome any season with a refreshing and absolutely good for your health Ayurvedic drink - the Kashaya. Kashaya has been brewed and consumed since time immemorial for its medicinal and Ayurvedic properties.

This is what a cup or two Kasahaya can do for you when consumed regularly:

  • It is known to enhance digestion, improve the appetite and bring down the fever.
  • In summers, drinking the kashaya regularly will keep urinary infections a bay.
  • Burning sensation in the body, hot flashes are relieved.
  • It is known to reduce the burning sensation in eyes, eye fatigue and other eye disorders caused by the Pitta dosha
  • It helps reduce symptoms like headaches, nausea and diarrhoea
  • It helps to regualrise the menstrual flow and lessen the menstrual cramps.

What you need to make the kashaya powder

  • Coriander seeds - 1 cup
  • Cumin seeds and fennel seeds ½ cup each

How to make it

Dry roast all the ingredients separately. Cool and grind to a coarse powder. Store the powder in airtight container.

How to brew it(makes one cup)

  • Milk and water ½ cup each
  • Kashaya powder 1 tbsp
  • Jaggery (preferred) or sugar - according to taste (It tastes great without the sugar too!)

Method: Mix water and milk in a sauce pan and boil. Add Kashaya powder and remove the saucepan from flame. Cover it with a lid. Let it steep for about 5 minutes. Strain, add jaggery/sugar and serve hot.

Let's have a look at the Ayurvedic properties of the ingredients that are a part of the drink.

Coriander seeds: With a bitter and pungent aftertaste, the seeds are light in nature and it aids in faster digestion. Coriander seeds are known to alleviate the three doshas (vata, kapha and pitta) and is known for its distinct thirst quenching effect.

Cumin seeds : These seeds are hot in potency, pungent in taste and post digestive effect. They are drying and light in nature and have a special cleansing effect, especially on the uterus.

Fennel seeds: Have a sweet aftertaste as well as a pungent taste. They are light in nature and are known to aid in digestion and provide relief from flatulence and menstrual cramps.

The cumin and fennel seeds are known to alleviate the Vata and Kapha dosha, but they also increase the Pitta dosha.
